He graduated from the acting department Drama School BV Shchukin (1951).

Directing debut in the film – in 1962, when the comic strip set "Seven nurses. In the genre of comedy has been made and the second picture – were missing summer "(1964, with N. Orlov). The film "Ajbolit 66", filmed on a fairy tale Korney Chukovsky, was a notable step in the development of music and comedy and played the role of Barmaleev – one of the brightest pages of artistic biography.

Rolan Bykov can rightly be called one of the best directors of children's cinema, and it created the films "Attention, Turtle!", "Telegram," "Car, Violin and Blot the dog" and especially "Scarecrow," went into the "golden fund" of Soviet cinema.

He was elected secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR.

Rolan Bykov died on the night of October 6, 1998 in Moscow, before reaching one year before his 70-year anniversary.

He was buried on October 9 at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, station number 10.

In 1994 he was awarded the honorary gold medal LN Tolstoy is awarded annually to International Association of Children's Fund.
