Menzel Adolph Friedrich Erdmann (1815) – The famous German historical and genre painter, attended, but very short time, the classes of academic artists in Berlin and formed almost self-taught. He first became known in 1833 notebook drawings, executed with pen and depicting "Life Artist" (Kunstlers Erd wallen). During this youthful effort AM followed by a series of lithographs "Splendors of Brandenburg history" (1834 – 1839, 12 pages) and several of his first experiments in painting with oil paints, what example. "Playing Chess" (1836), "Legal Advice" (1837), "court records" (1837), etc. But soon he was forced to set aside a palette and brush to do illustrations for the essay "History of Frederick the Great," Kugler ( 1839 – 1842) and following illustrating luxury editions of works of the emperor (1843 – 1849). Both of these works led M. deeper into the era of Frederick Veale. Reproducing its full historical accuracy, and superior performance of the actors, realistic and true high technical skill, he formed a famous name among his countrymen mostly paintings on the theme, taken from that era, eg. The Roundtable was chaired by Frederick. " (1850, located in the Berlin National Gallery), "Concert of Sans-Souci" (1852, ibid), "Frederick Veale. In the road" (1854), "Oath of Frederick Veale. In Breslau in 1741" (In breslavlskom Museum), "The meeting was chaired by Friedrich. And Joseph II in Neisse", "Frederick before Leytenskoy battle," Frederick in Gohkirkenskoy Battle "(1856, in Berlin's Royal Palace) and others in 1850. M. wrote, besides a few pictures biblical content, the dignity which in many cases unnecessary harm to their realism, and then again showed his talent with the full splendor in the magnificent "Coronation of Frederick William I in Königsberg" (1861 – 1865; in Berlin's Royal Palace ), "Check out the king to the war, July 30, 1870 (1871 in the Berlin National Gallery), Ball Dinner" (in 1878), "Conversation King with a lady at the court ball" (1880), "a religious procession in Gastein" (1880), "Square d'Erbe in Verona" and "Newest Cyclops" (1876) – the most remarkable of all the artist's paintings, depicting the interior of the rolling-mill plant while working on it. Beyond these works, M. played a lot of other, less significant genre paintings, drawings, pen songs for politipazhey, watercolors and gouaches. Since 1856 he is professor and member of the Berlin Acad. Arts. Wed Wessely, "Adolf Menzel, sein Leben und seine Werke" (Lpts., 1875).
